In The Classroom

Summer is just around the corner! I hope the students keep up their study skills by working on some of the websites we have visited throughout the year. I will be sending home a bookmark with my favorite sites. I have also listed them at the end of this newsletter.

First through sixth grades enjoyed using the newest “gadget,” the Quizdom Remote Control system. We obtained the Quizdom unit through a grant from Christian County Solid Waste Department. These remote control systems allow students instant feedback on answers, and also help the teacher to check student understanding. Thank you, CCSWD!

 Kindergarten

Mrs. Heinemann’s class began working on the Phonics software. Students learned beginning and ending consonants as well as short and long vowel sounds.

First Grade
Mrs. Peabody’s class worked in Amusement Park Phonics. Activities include alphabetizing, vowel sounds and choosing the correct word to complete a sentence. First graders also worked on Penny Panda to work on money skills.
Second Grade
Ms. Stone’s class has also worked in Amusement Park Phonics to help with reading and spelling skills. Second graders enjoyed a dinosaur activity that was an extension of our lesson on measurement. Each student received a small capsule that turned into a sponge dinosaur shape once it was exposed to warm water. We used our estimating and measuring skills when the dinosaurs “hatched.”
Third Grade

Miss Murray’s class has visited several fun websites to help reinforce classroom lessons. For English activities, we visited http://activities.bradleys-english-school.com/. They practiced keyboarding on http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/. They also learned about circuits and conductors on http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/science/activities/conductors.shtml. Third graders worked on fractions on the site http://www.iknowthat.com/com/L3?Area=FractionGame.

Fourth Grade
Mrs. Daley’s class has been studying the solar system during computer class. The students completed two quizzes using www.enchantedlearning.com. They became “experts” on a specific planet using the site http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/. Students used the information they learned to create question slides for the Quizdom game.
Fifth Grade
Miss Mooney’s class has worked on several lessons and quizzes in www.brainpop.com. Topics include sound waves, light, refraction and differentiation, color, energy sources, states of matter, and matter changing states.
Sixth Grade
Mrs. Kennedy’s class completed their biome brochures using Microsoft Publisher. They moved on to learning how to use the Excel program by interviewing students about favorite things during recess. For a tutorial in Excel, visit http://www.internet4classrooms.com/on-line_excel.htm.

Thank you to Mrs. Bernie Sloan for donating the flash drives for our faculty and staff! They will come in handy to transfer files back and forth from home.

Sponsor a Station

There are now only 22 stations available for sponsorship in the computer lab. Call the school office at 824-6501 if you are interested in an application. Sponsorship is $100 per station per school year. Anyone who sponsors a station now will have sponsorship through the end of school year 2008. Individuals, families or businesses may sponsor a station. You may sponsor a station in honor of a person or in memory of a loved one. Funds raised from sponsorship will help pay for ongoing lab expenses, such as CD ROM’s, ink cartridges, photo paper, and printer paper. Each station that is sponsored will have a sturdy, plastic tent card bearing the name of the sponsor and the dedication.
